Sunshine Coast Appliance & Mattress                                                Assistant Manager

  • The meaning behind this job was work, it was a job…, it helps build your resume, pay your bills, etc…  At the same time I did enjoy working with my colleagues, with helping them to learn and grow, helping the customers and staff with information about the products so that the customers could get the best informed decisions about what they wanted. And helping out when necessary to keep the team functioning as smoothly as possible, and to make everyone’s lives as easy as I could to reduce staff turnover and do what I could to make it a nice place to work.

WESTERN SOCIETY FOR CHILDREN (WSFC)                           Board of Directors Treasurer

  • The meaning behind this job was of course to get work experience, build up my resume, and to have a contact to use as a reference. And that is where it started as I graduated from university, but over the months and years it developed beyond that, getting to know the volunteers each year and the other board members, into wanting to help the director as much as was possible with my limited time and knowledge of the area to help children with physical disabilities to make their lives better, to help them find supports, and for them to be able to access government funding and help.

BC Acorn, and other volunteer orgs                                                                             Volunteer

  • These were a long time ago doing volunteer work a few years after getting my degree, helping disadvantaged individuals get tax returns filed and explaining to them how taxes worked and how they could file their own tax returns in future years.
It was of course like any volunteer work much because it would give job experience, look good on a resume, give references etc.
But it was also nice helping others, people who were very stressed out about taxes and/or who had fallen behind and helping them to avoid that stress and get caught up was a good experience both for myself and in going the extra step to help them be prepared for it in the future rather than just this day they were in the community center with us volunteers.
