To me the meaning of the first peoples principles of learning is to understand that the indigenous cultures of the America’s had different philosophies from those of the European colonizers.
This seems a simple concept to grasp in of course they were different as every nation is different and even regions within nations are different, but throughout Canadian history we have focused  our beliefs almost exclusively on the way of thinking of the peoples of England, France, and Scotland and assumed others were similar.
Having the first peoples principals of learning helps us to remember others were here and thriving for millennia before Europeans were and to incorporate some of their cultural beliefs and outlooks into how we teach our children as they are still a large and vibrant part of our community as well as many of our immigrants sharing much if not more with the first nations peoples philosophies than with European ones.
